Dementia | The Hidden Cost for Families and Carers
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dementia is one of the major causes of disability and dependency among older people globally. The WHO also estimate that approximately 50% of the costs to the economy are attributable to care provided by informal carers (e.g. family members and close friends), who provide on average 5 hours of care and supervision per day.
Every week, we hear from exhausted relatives and worried friends desperate to secure the right care for someone living with dementia. Many are facing the same barriers: unsuitable placements, funding worries, no one appointed or with legal authority to support them, and stressful battles with local authorities and ICBs.
The WHO warns that people living with dementia are too often denied the same freedoms and rights as others, with some subjected to physical or chemical restraint in care homes and hospitals. The recent AGNI ruling by the UK Supreme Court could significantly change how Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) are assessed and applied. We are concerned this may leave some vulnerable adults, including people with dementia, with fewer protections than before. Previously, many had access to an independent advocate, known as a Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR), to help challenge restrictions placed on them. With those safeguards reduced, the role of families and friends in protecting the rights of people with dementia becomes even more critical.
