Why More UK Families Are Updating Their Wills in 2026

More and more families across the UK are reviewing and updating their wills in 2026, as the significant changes to inheritance tax (IHT) rules and rising property values bring estate planning further into the spotlight.

The recent amendments that were introduced in April 2026, have changed long-standing tax reliefs, particularly for business and agricultural assets. The new caps now limit the amount that can pass tax-free, meaning some estates that previously avoided inheritance tax may now face a liability. At the same time, frozen tax thresholds and increasing house prices are pushing more families above the current £325,000 tax-free allowance, with amounts above this taxed at up to 40%.

The changes are prompting many individuals to reconsider whether their existing wills still reflect their current wishes—or remain tax-efficient. In some cases, older or “off-the-shelf” wills may no longer be suitable under the new rules.

Further changes are already on the horizon as from April 2027, unused pension funds are expected to form part of a person’s taxable estate, which will potentially increase inheritance tax exposure for thousands of families. Alongside the rising estate values, experts are warning that more households may be affected more than ever before.

Beside tax considerations, there has also been an increase in disputes over estates, often driven by higher property values and more complex family structures. This highlights the importance of having a clear, up-to-date will in place to minimise uncertainty and reduce the risk of disputes.

For many families, reviewing a will is no longer something to put off for the future—it is an essential step in protecting loved ones and ensuring assets are passed on as intended.
