Carers Week 2025: Celebrating the Unsung Heroes in Our Communities
From 9th to 15th June 2025, Carers Week will shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of unpaid carers across the UK. This annual event serves as a reminder to recognise, appreciate, and support those who dedicate themselves to caring for family members, friends, or loved ones with long-term physical or mental health conditions. At Moore & Tibbits Solicitors, we are committed to ensuring that carers have access to the legal support and resources they need to balance their caregiving responsibilities with their rights and well-being.
Who Are Carers?
Carers come from all walks of life. They are not only those looking after elderly parents or partners with dementia but also young people supporting siblings with disabilities or adults caring for friends dealing with mental health challenges. Often, they are invisible, quietly managing complex care routines, and balancing emotional and financial pressures. According to Carers UK, there are over 6.5 million unpaid carers in the UK, a number that continues to rise as our population ages and health conditions become more widespread.
Why Carers Week Matters
While carers are often the backbone of the healthcare system, supporting loved ones and alleviating pressure on public services, they face significant challenges in maintaining their own health, finances, and well-being. Many carers report feeling isolated, overwhelmed, and underappreciated. The financial strain can also be considerable, with carers often having to reduce their working hours or leave employment altogether to provide care.
Carers Week provides an important opportunity for local communities, charities, and professionals to unite in offering resources, advice, and recognition for these unsung heroes. It is a week of celebration and advocacy, but also of education on how we can all make life easier for carers, both in terms of practical support and the recognition of their rights.
Moore and Tibbits Solicitors: Supporting Carers
At Moore and Tibbits, we understand that carers face a range of legal challenges that can add to the stress of their already demanding roles. Whether it is ensuring that your loved one’s care needs are met, navigating financial support, or understanding legal entitlements, we are here to help. We attend many support groups to try and ensure carers are aware of what they are entitled to.
Here are some ways we can support you:
- Wills and Estates: If you are a carer, it is essential to have a will in place to ensure that your loved one’s wishes are respected. We offer expert advice on creating wills and managing estates;
- Lasting Power of Attorney: As a carer, you may need to make decisions on behalf of a loved one who is no longer able to manage their own affairs. We can guide you through the process of setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney to ensure that decisions are made in their best interest when they are unable to do so themselves. If there isn’t a Lasting Power of Attorney in place, we have a specialist Court of Protection team who can provide you with advice and options available.
- Access to Financial Support: Many carers are entitled to financial assistance through various benefits, such as Carer’s Allowance, but navigating the system can be complex. We can help you understand what you’re entitled to and how to apply for these benefits.
- Employment Rights: Balancing work and care can be challenging. We can advise you on your employment rights, including flexible working arrangements, unpaid leave, and other support options available to carers in the workplace.
- Legal Advice and Support: If you are dealing with disputes regarding care services, healthcare entitlements, or social care issues, we offer legal representation to ensure your rights and those of your loved one are protected. We have an RGN as part of our team who has also has specific expertise in eligibility for NHS continuing healthcare funding.
How You Can Get Involved
Carers Week isn’t just for those who are caregivers. It’s a community effort, and everyone can help make a difference. Here are some ways you can show your support:
- Donate: Consider donating to charities that support carers, helping them continue their vital work in offering assistance and resources.
- Volunteer: If you’re able, volunteering your time can make a real difference in the lives of carers and those they care for.
- Spread Awareness: Share information about Carers Week on social media, attend events, and encourage others to recognize the importance of carers in our communities.
- Offer Practical Help: Small acts of kindness, such as offering to run errands or help with household chores, can go a long way in supporting a carer.
